The Top Questions
This is the list of frequently
asked questions for the week
Communications
Q: Why does FaxWorks lock up when trying to print from WORD?
A: Close the FaxWorks Call Center before faxing from Microsoft® Word or disable
background printing in Word. To disable background printing, from the Tools
menu, select Options and select the Print tab. Under Printing Options, remove
the check from Background Printing.
Q: Why does my modem show up as 28.8 bps instead of 33.6 bps?
A: The windows only modem supports the v34+ protocol, which supports maximum
speeds up to 33.6 bps. The text displayed after installing the drivers only
reflects a 28.8 bps speed. This text was incorrect, so Gateway 2000® now has
an updated driver which allows the modem to be displayed as a 33.6 bps modem.
Q: Why do I have a yellow "!" on Communication port in Device Manager?
A: Generally, the yellow exclamation point indicates the onboard serial
port has been disabled. When Gateway 2000 ships a system with an internal modem, we
disable the secondary communications port in the system CMOS to prevent a
conflict with the modem. When the system boots, the system BIOS passes
information to Windows® 95. Part of that information is that the system does
have a secondary serial port installed and that the port is disabled. Windows
95 recognizes that the serial port is disabled and places a yellow exclamation
point on the port in device manager. This isn't a problem with your system.
Portables
Q: Why is my CD-ROM not recognized on my Gateway SoloTM 2100?
A: Chances are, the CD-ROM just needs to be removed and reinserted.
This ensures a good connection and allows your Gateway Solo 2100 to recognize
the drive.
Software
Q: How do I print from Greetings Workshop?
A: There is a cartoon character to the right of the screen. In a word bubble are
several options. One of them is "Print Document"
Q: Do I need or can I get Windows® 97 or Windows 95B?
A: Windows 95 OSR/2 (Windows 95B) is only available on new system
shipments (i.e. we cannot ship this out separately due to
contractual agreements). Microsoft is not planning a retail release
of this product and it will not be available in stores.
OSR/2 is a service release meant to address hardware introduced since the
initial Windows 95 release on August 24,1995. Contrary to what some
magazines have claimed, OSR/2 is not Windows 97.
Those customers who received Windows 95 on their Gateway 2000 system(s)
have the correct Operating System for the hardware in their system(s).
Gateway 2000 does not recommend that customers install this OEM Service
Release on systems that were not originally shipped with it.
Gateway 2000 will make available to those customers who have known issues,
the correct software patch(es) from Microsoft. These will be managed
through our Technical Support team on a case by case basis.
Q: I am having problems configuring my Vivo 90 soundcard?
A: Run the Ensoniq Wizard. This utility will remove your old drivers and install the
latest versions. This will clear up most problems with any Ensoniq® Sound Card. Be sure
to get the appropriate version for your Operating System.
Windows 95
Windows 3.1x and MS-DOS
Windows NT 4.0
Note: This isn't the Wizard, but they're the latest drivers for NT.
Q: I'm receiving an error relating to my STB® VirgeTM Vx video card.
What can I do?
A: Any of the following situations may occur when using the STB Virge/Vx 1.23m3
drivers:
When using the multiple desktop option in the STB Vision Control Panel
with three different desktops and trying to change resolutions in the
Windows 95 Display Properties window, the following error may occur
"Rundll32. An error has occurred in your program. To keep working
anyway click ignore and save your work in a new file. To quit this
program click close. You will lose any information you entered since
you last save." After choosing Ignore OR Close, the next error is
"Rundll32. This program has performed an illegal operation and will be
shut down. Rundll32 caused a General protection fault in module
STBV3D.DRV.
When using the multiple desktop option in the STB Vision Control Panel
with three different desktops and using the hot keys to move between
desktops, trying to change the resolution to any setting may produce
following error message: "Explorer This program has performed an
illegal operation and will be shut down. Explorer caused a General
protection fault in module STBV3D.DRV" and the system locks hard.
If the multiple desktop option is used after cycling through all three
desktops, when trying to open the MS-DOS Prompt and minimizing the size
by hitting the key combination of Alt+Enter, you may see either
"WINOLDAP caused a general protection fault in module STBV3D.DRV" or
fatal exception errors in KERNEL32.

In MS Excel® 7.0, there are missing numbers or distorted displays.
